When I joined the Society of Actuaries over 25 years ago, I
thought that my membership would give me the opportunity to
do stimulating work. I haven’t been disappointed. As an
actuary I have been able to do and participate in a wide
variety of interesting activities.
Even with the limitations resulting from being a single
parent for the past 19 years, I have enjoyed working for an
insurance company as the Director, Finance, on staff at the
Society of Actuaries as the Finance and Investment Education
Actuary, for a health plan as the Chief Actuary, for a
consulting firm providing consulting services to health
plans, providers , employers, state governments and the
federal government.

It is an honor to be on the ballot for President-Elect of
the Society of Actuaries. The Society of Actuaries has the
important mission to promote actuaries globally as leaders
in risk management through a “best-in-market” knowledge base
and to foster an evolving image as a dynamic and relevant
profession. It would be my privilege to work with the Board,
the Sections, the academic community, the Staff, and you –
the members – to support and encourage what we have always
done well, and to find new ways to improve our knowledge
base and to enhance the status of our profession.
I hope that you will honor me
with your support and your vote so that I will have this new
opportunity to give back to the Actuarial profession as
President-Elect.
Volunteer Highlights
In the past 25 years, I’ve been privileged to work with
colleagues from various disciplines as we redesigned our
systems for educating new members and developed new
continuing education for existing members. I assisted in
identifying materials on finance and investments for us to
use to extend our basic education curriculum. These changes
have taken on even greater significance in today’s business
climate.
Additionally, I was part of the committee that redesigned
the role of Sections to ensure that all sections could
actively participate in and communicate with the Society
leadership. I have served as chair of the Investment Section
Council and I am currently the Secretary/Treasurer of the
Health Section Council.
While
I was the Finance and Investment Education Actuary on the
Society’s staff for five years I worked with the academic
community to enhance basic education. I also served on the
Board of Directors for another five, including two years as
Vice President. I believe that working on staff, working
with the academic community, serving on the two section
councils and on the Board has given me an unmatched
perspective on this organization. An effective President
needs to develop a dynamic partnership among the Board, the
Sections, the academic community and the Staff – and keep
the members energized and involved. I’ve seen the work of
the Society from all perspectives, so I know what needs to
be done to create and maintain strong, effective
partnerships among all of our stakeholders.
